Getting to the last few weeks of your pregnancy can be as exhausting as it is exciting for everyone involved. It is not just having the baby and bringing it home, it is how you home is ready for that big day as well. Do you know how to get your home ready for a newborn?
While the baby may not be walking or even crawling to get into trouble shortly after their birth, there are still various things that need to be made to finish this adjustment period. For instance, if you have pets you need to ensure they are aware someone else will be living there. Some parents use a method to familiarize the animal with the scent of the baby. This can be done while the infant is still in the hospital by having someone take a sleeping hat or sheet the baby used in the crib there back to your home to let the animal smell. The sooner they become familiar with the smell, they will recognize it when the baby comes home. There are also classes and tips on several pet websites that encourage families to use a small plastic baby doll and play with the animal with it showing them not to bite or scratch or play with the baby.
Next, get that nursery together. This is a must item to complete before you make that frantic run to the hospital. In preparation for the baby months leading up to the delivery, you should get the crib assembled, move in any furniture you will be using such as rockers, dressers and changing tables. Get everything filled up and cleaned prior to your last month or two of the pregnancy if you can. Put away all of the diaper rash creams, diapers, wipes, clothing and toys you have purchased for the baby. If you bought a mobile or crib bedding, get all that done as well you will be thankful you did later! Washing clothing items and linens ahead of time will be time savers when you bring your baby home. Keep in mind you will be getting up at night, in some cases several times so ensure that you have plenty of fresh supplies awaiting you for quick moments in the evenings.
Cleaning! You do not want to clean your baby's items or linens in products that can be very harmful for them. For example, there are endless products currently on the market that can be used to cleanse baby items such as clothing has its own laundry detergent. It is not recommended to be utilizing bleach or other harsh chemicals that the baby can inhale and get very ill from. Have your home as ready as you can for the big day, prepare the other children, clean the rooms, plan for the pets and try to relax as even the most organized mom-to-be forgets something!
Yes this day is rapidly approaching for me! I've only got about 3 months give or take left to go, and it's been at least 5 years since my husband and I have had a newborn around. There is still a lot of baby proofing left to do along with setting up the crib, changing table, etc. I'm a little overwhelmed at how much more I need to do before he gets here.
